Vanuatu Hosts First-Ever Carbon Market Training to Build National Capacity

Port Vila, Vanuatu -Vanuatu today launched its first dedicated Carbon Market Training, a twoday event held from 10th –11th September 2025 in Port Vila.

The training brings together representatives from the Departments of Climate Change, Energy, Forestry, Local Authorities, and key partners including Live & Learn.

Organized by the Pacific Community (SPC) and the Regional Pacific NDC Hub in partnership with the Government of Vanuatu, with support from the the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) of Australia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT), New Zealand, the training aims to strengthen the country’s understanding of global and regional carbon markets, including mechanisms under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

The program had

  • Built awareness of how carbon markets operate and their role in supporting climate action,
  • Clarify institutional roles and regulatory frameworks for effective participation, ensuring safeguarding and integrity
  • Supported the achievement of Vanuatu’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets,
  • Explored potential projects in renewable energy, forestry, and conservation that could generate carbon credits.
  • Fostered dialogue and cooperation across government ministries, agencies, and stakeholders.

By the end of the training, participants are expected to gain enhanced knowledge of carbon markets, a clearer understanding of institutional arrangements, and initial ideas for eligible emissions-reduction projects aligned with national priorities.

This marks a significant milestone for Vanuatu, positioning the country to access new sources of climate finance, protect ecosystems, and support sustainable community development while advancing national climate and development goals.
